It is complete separation from God.
Not to have eternal life is to remain spiritually dead and to face the prospect of eternal death.
"And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt." (The death corpses will not but sleeping consciousess.)
