WRONG EXPECTATIONS ABOUT SECOND COMING

After Jesus was crucified, his followers rejoiced that he was resurrected from the dead two days later. Jesus of Nazareth was the Messiah. The Kingdom of God had come.

The problem was that Jewish people had expected the Kingdom to come in a different way. It would come as a spectacular event replacing earthly kingdoms with a divine order. Jesus as Messiah would be “coming on the clouds of heaven with great power and glory. With a trumpet blast he will send out his angels, and they will gather his chosen from the four winds.” (Matthew 24: 30-31) This obviously had not happened. After Jesus was resurrected, earthly events proceeded much as before.

The Christian community still expected Jesus to return to earth in a sudden event, which has become known as Christ’s “second coming”. They expected Jesus to return when his followers were assembled in a communal meal patterned after the “last supper”. Because this was expected especially at Easter, it was important to synchronize this holiday in the calendars of different communities.
