As people approach God, they feel that they are becoming distanced to the world. Most of them are bothered with the feeling of moving away from materiality. They do not like drifting apart from their monetary desires. If God willed, He would have created each person as he wished, but he gave freedom to mankind. He wants man to return his face to Him with his own will. He does not apply coercion.
You come closer to God as you become purified. And as you come closer to God, you notice more of your deficiencies and flaws. And this speeds purification. But at this point, most souls do not want to give up on the world and its temporary rights and pleasures, and they are derailed. Hold the reins of your desires tightly. Never let them loose.
